Occupying a prime position directly on the River Thames, Sea Containers London is one of those hotels that feels distinctly connected to its surroundings. Set on the South Bank, the design takes inspiration from the glamour of 1920s transatlantic travel, combining playful nautical details with contemporary interiors and a lively, lifestyle-led atmosphere.
We stayed in one of the hotel’s spacious Family Rooms, which worked brilliantly for a London stay with children. Sea Containers is genuinely family friendly without ever feeling like a traditional family hotel, with interconnecting room configurations, kids’ menus, thoughtful children’s amenities and its Little Explorers programme.
Accommodation is one of the most interesting aspects of the property. Alongside rooms and newly reimagined Thamed Suites are four individually designed Cabin Suites, each inspired by a different era of transatlantic travel: Edwardian, Art Deco, Mid-Century and Dynasty. There are also Riverview Balcony Suites and expansive Thames Apartments, making it worth exploring the different categories for a more unique stay.
There is plenty to keep you at the hotel. We loved Sea Containers Restaurant, the relaxed riverside dining destination on the ground floor, while drinks can continue at experimental cocktail bar Lyaness or rooftop 12th Knot, with panoramic views across London.
Downstairs, agua Spa offers treatments, a steam room and a wonderfully calm escape from the city, alongside a fully equipped 24-hour gym. One of the hotel’s most unusual features is its own intimate 56-seat Curzon cinema, showing a mix of new releases and family films.
Location is another major draw. Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and the South Bank’s theatres, restaurants and cultural attractions are within easy walking distance, while the pedestrianised riverside makes exploring particularly easy with children.
Stylish enough for a couples’ weekend yet exceptionally easy for families, Sea Containers London manages to be playful, design-led and genuinely useful all at once. It’s the kind of London hotel where the property itself becomes part of the experience.
