Fresh fish markets are always one of my favourite places to explore in any city, and the Sai Ying Pun selection is not an exception. This fish market isn’t for the faint hearted, so if you are only comfortable with the European style fishmongers this may not be the place for you. The vast variety of sea fare can be very intimidating when you see eels, snakes, and turtles, but don’t worry as they have plenty of salmon, scallops, and prawns as well. Most shoppers are local, and purchasing is done with a lot of gesturing if you are not a Cantonese speaker. I highly recommend the prawns and salmon which I purchase almost every week. You can get enough of both to cook for a dinner for two at under $100 hkd. If I had a proper oven I would definitely be purchasing the whole sea bass and sea bream to grill with lemon. Definitely worth a visit if you are looking for affordable, fresh seafood and a truly local experience.
