I recently had the opportunity to sample Omerto, the world’s only tomato apertif wine. The concept sounded exciting and I was eager to pair the flavours with a recommended menu of foods that would go nicely with Omerto’s unique flavours. I sampled Omerto Sec first, which is a dry wine, and loved how it paired with fresh oysters as well as the richer flavours in the Iberico ham and Comte cheese. The distinct flavour reminded me slightly of sake and I could easily see it being equally delicious with sushi or sashimi. Omerto Moelleux holds a medium sweetness and was easy to pair with a variety of dishes including the juicy Iberico pork & foie gras sliders, the tender USDA prime grain fed rib-eye, and the indulgent slow roasted suckling pig. I found the sweeter flavour of the wine went well with the richer meat dishes and made a perfect pairing. To pair with our dessert we had the Mead Rosee and I loved how it brought out the sweet notes in the Pistachio Milk Bar without being sickly or overpowering. Overall I found Omerto allowed me to have a distinct and unique dining experience and brought out different flavours in each dish I would not have noticed if I had stuck to my usual white or red wine. A definite must try for wine lovers and foodies and I look forward to pairing these wines with my meals more often in the future.
