Commune offers a wonderful introduction to Indonesia’s rich culinary heritage. Set within the tranquil surroundings of Umana Bali, the restaurant celebrates the country’s diverse regional cuisine while providing guests with immersive experiences that go far beyond the dining table.

One of the highlights of our stay was joining Commune’s family friendly cooking class, which proved to be just as enjoyable for the children as it was for the adults. Guided by the talented chefs, we learnt how to prepare two Indonesian favourites from scratch: fragrant sate lilit and the all important sambal. From blending fresh herbs and aromatic spices to shaping the sate around lemongrass stalks before grilling, the class was hands on, engaging and a fantastic way to gain a deeper appreciation for the flavours that make Indonesian cuisine so special.

After discovering the techniques behind these iconic dishes, we returned to Commune in the evening for its beautifully presented Indonesian Rijsttafel, a feast designed to showcase the incredible diversity of the archipelago’s culinary traditions. The carefully curated selection of regional specialities offered a wonderful balance of flavours, from fragrant spices and rich curries to vibrant sambals and freshly prepared accompaniments, allowing us to experience a wide variety of dishes in one memorable meal.

Combined with Commune’s elegant setting, warm Balinese hospitality and genuine passion for sharing local food culture, the experience became one of the highlights of our stay at Umana Bali.
