Date night in Covent Garden took us to Jamie Oliver Catherine St, the chef’s flagship London restaurant celebrating British food with a nostalgic yet contemporary approach. Set just moments from the theatres of the West End, the restaurant feels polished but relaxed, with a warm, buzzy atmosphere that works just as well for a casual dinner as it does for a date night. Jamie describes the concept as a celebration of Britain’s rich food culture, with seasonal dishes and ingredients sourced with a focus on quality and sustainability.
We started with Olives on Ice, Borough Market olives served alongside our first drinks. The Posh Prawn Cocktail was a playful take on the retro classic, combining shrimp and prawns with yuzu, Marie Rose sauce and crisp focaccia. We also loved the Steak Tartare, prepared with dry-aged British beef, quail egg, cornichons and capers, with crispy onion rings adding plenty of texture.
For mains, Trevor’s Chicken is a signature must order. Free-range chicken breast arrives wrapped in golden puff pastry with earthy porcini duxelles and a delicious creamy mustard sauce. The 12oz Dry-Aged Sirloin, a 42-day-aged steak cooked on the bone and served with peppercorn sauce, is another stand out option. The beef was full of flavour and perfectly prepared.
Dessert was the beautiful Cherry Bakewell Pavlova, pairing crisp meringue with Kirsch Chantilly, almond nougatine and tart Morello cherry sorbet. Sweet, nostalgic and surprisingly light, it was the perfect ending to our date night.
