Set directly on London’s South Bank, Sea Containers Restaurant combines one of the city’s most iconic riverside locations with relaxed, modern dining. Part of Sea Containers London, the restaurant overlooks the River Thames and draws inspiration from the building’s wider 1920s transatlantic liner aesthetic. The menu follows an American-British direction, focusing on seasonal ingredients and generous plates designed for sharing.
We started with a few appetisers to share. The Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail was a classic done well, served with punchy horseradish and Bloody Mary sauce, while the Hand Cut Beef Fillet Tartare paired beautifully tender beef with farm egg, capers and another hit of horseradish.
Seafood continued with Atlantic Cod, a comforting dish served in a creamy potato and leek chowder with clams and dill. The Bone-In Dover Sole is a must order served with a delicious brown butter sauce with capers, lemon and parsley. For something richer, the Surrey Farm Rib Eye arrived perfectly cooked with watercress and a deeply savoury green peppercorn sauce.
For desserts, the Baked New York Cheesecake with mixed berries was dense and creamy in all the right ways, while the Chocolate Brownie A La Mode paired perfectly with vanilla ice cream, salted caramel and pecans. We also highly recommend the Sticky Toffee Pudding with clotted cream ice cream which was an appropriately decadent finish.
Despite its impressive setting, Sea Containers feels refreshingly informal. Floor-to-ceiling riverside views and a buzzy dining room make it equally suited to a leisurely lunch, dinner with friends or a celebratory meal. We especially loved how the menu balances familiar comfort food with quality British ingredients, making this a very easy South Bank restaurant to return to.
