There are some restaurants that instantly make you want to linger, and The Delaunay is certainly one of them. Perfectly positioned opposite the Royal Opera House it feels wonderfully timeless, bringing the glamour of a grand European café to the heart of London. From the elegant dining room and impeccable attention to detail to the gentle buzz of conversation, it is the kind of place where you could happily settle in for a long lunch or an unhurried evening over excellent food and wine. The attentive yet effortlessly warm service made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived.
We started with the Dressed Dorset Crab, a beautifully fresh dish that allowed the sweetness of the crab to shine, while the Grilled Langoustines with garlic butter were every bit as indulgent as we had hoped. Perfectly cooked and wonderfully succulent, they were elevated by the rich garlic butter without overpowering the delicate flavour of the seafood.
For our mains, we couldn’t resist trying both land and sea. The Whole Baked Sea Bass, served with tomato noisette and caper berries, was beautifully cooked with crisp skin and moist, flaky flesh. The accompaniments added brightness and depth, complementing the fish perfectly. The Filet au Poivre was equally impressive, cooked exactly as requested and served with a wonderfully rich peppercorn sauce that enhanced the quality of the beef without stealing the spotlight.
To finish, the Classic Apple Strudel with vanilla ice cream was everything you hope for from this timeless dessert. Delicate layers of crisp pastry surrounded a warmly spiced apple filling, while the melting vanilla ice cream provided the perfect contrast.
The wine list is thoughtfully curated, with an excellent selection spanning both classic and contemporary producers, while the cocktail menu offers beautifully executed classics that suit the restaurant’s refined atmosphere perfectly.
Elegant without feeling over formal, The Delaunay is the kind of restaurant that leaves a lasting impression. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, enjoying a pre-theatre dinner or simply looking for one of London’s most beautiful dining rooms, it delivers an experience that is every bit as memorable as the food itself.
