Dining barefoot beneath the stars is one of those quintessential Maldivian experiences, and Gili Lankanfushi’s Asian Street Market captures the mood perfectly. Set outdoors with tables directly on the sand, the evening transforms the beachfront into an atmospheric street food market, complete with softly lit stalls, open cooking stations and live music setting the soundtrack for the night.

Inspired by the bustling night markets found throughout Asia, the experience brings together flavours from across the region, with chefs preparing dishes to order at a collection of live stations. There is something wonderfully relaxed about wandering between the stalls with your feet in the sand, deciding what to try next while the scent of charcoal grills and sizzling woks drifts through the warm evening air.

One of our favourites was the Peking duck, carved and served with all the classic accompaniments, alongside freshly grilled yakitori straight from the barbecue. The Sri Lankan hoppers were another highlight, delicately crisp around the edges and made fresh at the station. We also loved watching the chefs at the live wok station, where dishes were tossed over high flames and served piping hot within moments.

The variety makes it particularly fun for families and groups, as everyone can graze their way through different flavours and return to favourite stations throughout the evening. Rather than feeling like a traditional resort buffet, the interactive set up gives dinner a sense of occasion while still remaining wonderfully informal.

With beautiful live music, tables beneath the open sky and the ocean just steps away, Asian Street Market was one of our favourite dining experiences at Gili Lankanfushi. The combination of excellent food and a thoughtfully created setting made it a memorable way to spend an evening in the Maldives.
