Bringing the spirit of a Brazilian churrascaria to the Maldives, Gili Lankanfushi’s Churrascaria Night is a fun and interactive dining experience set entirely overwater. With the ocean surrounding us and the warm evening breeze drifting through the restaurant, it was a wonderfully atmospheric setting for a Brazilian-inspired barbecue feast.
The experience follows the traditional churrascaria style, complete with a baton at each table that you simply turn to green for “more please” and red when you are ready to pause. Throughout the evening, the team roll charcoal barbecues between the tables, laden with large skewers of roasting meat and seafood, carving and serving everything fresh as they go. It creates a lively, sociable atmosphere and makes dinner feel like much more of an experience than a conventional buffet.
We particularly loved the juicy cuts of steak and beautifully cooked lamb, arriving hot from the charcoal grill. Seafood was equally well represented, with fresh prawns and local reef fish alongside tuna grilled to order. Being able to sample a little of everything, then simply flip the baton back to green when we were ready for another round, made the evening both relaxed and incredibly indulgent.
Alongside the barbecue, a vibrant salad bar offered plenty of fresh, colourful accompaniments, while an extensive selection of cheeses and desserts provided the perfect finish to the meal. There was an impressive amount of choice without taking the focus away from the charcoal-grilled meats and seafood at the heart of the experience.
We have experienced plenty of themed dining nights during our travels around the Maldives, but Gili Churrascaria felt genuinely different. The combination of the overwater setting, tableside charcoal grills and playful Brazilian-style service made it a fun and memorable evening, and something we haven’t encountered elsewhere in the Maldives.
