There are plenty of luxurious hotels in London, but few come with a story quite like Great Scotland Yard Hotel. Hidden down a quiet street between Whitehall and Trafalgar Square, this Grade II-listed landmark is part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, a portfolio celebrating distinctive hotels with individual identities, fascinating histories and a strong connection to their surroundings.
The address itself has more than 1,000 years of history. The site was once associated with Scottish royalty before becoming home to the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police, while its stories have been linked with names including Charles Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle and some of London’s most notorious criminal investigations. When Great Scotland Yard opened as a hotel in 2019, it became the first Unbound Collection by Hyatt property in the UK. Rather than erasing this colourful past, the hotel has embraced it.
Throughout the property, contemporary luxury sits alongside playful references to law, order and British history. Artwork, books, unexpected design details and eclectic furnishings give the hotel the feeling of an eccentric private residence rather than a conventional five-star property. Even the rooms incorporate subtle references to the building’s past, with bespoke British furnishings and carefully curated artwork.
Accommodation ranges from elegant rooms to characterful suites including the Sherlock and Koestler Suites. For families, the spacious connecting options are particularly appealing. The Premiere Family Room combines a king bedroom and twin bedroom, each with its own bathroom, allowing families to stay together without sacrificing privacy. Larger groups can opt for the impressive two-bedroom suite, while the adjoining No.1 Great Scotland Yard Townhouse is an extraordinary five-storey Georgian residence with two bedrooms, living spaces, a kitchenette, games room and private entrance.
Service was a standout throughout our stay where the team created a genuinely warm and welcoming atmosphere, with thoughtful, attentive service that made our family feel immediately at home.
Mornings began with an excellent breakfast, with everything needed for a leisurely start before exploring London. We also loved dining at The Parlour, the hotel’s opulent all-day lounge, where modern British dishes, afternoon tea and beautifully crafted desserts continue the property’s playful take on tradition.
Location is another huge advantage. Step outside and Trafalgar Square, Whitehall and the Thames are moments away, with Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and Covent Garden all easily reached on foot.
Great Scotland Yard manages that rare balance of being luxurious without feeling predictable. From its storied address and characterful interiors to spacious family accommodation, memorable dining and exceptional service, it is exactly the type of one-of-a-kind property that makes The Unbound Collection by Hyatt so compelling.
