Walking around the island
Just a short speedboat journey from Malé, Grand Park Kodhipparu feels a world away from the bustle of the capital. Surrounded by impossibly clear turquoise water, pristine white sand and a thriving house reef, the resort delivered exactly the kind of Maldivian escape we love, with plenty to keep the whole family entertained alongside those wonderfully slow island moments.
We stayed in an Overwater Pool Villa positioned directly on the reef, and the location was exceptional. Our private deck and pool looked out across endless shades of blue, with steps leading straight into the ocean. The reef drop off was incredibly close, making it easy to snorkel straight from our villa and encounter an abundance of marine life. We spotted countless colourful fish and even watched dolphins swimming past our villa, one of those magical Maldives moments we will never forget.
Our floating breakfast was another memorable experience. Arriving in our private pool laden with tropical fruit, pastries, juices and breakfast favourites, it was an indulgent way to enjoy a slow morning with the ocean as our backdrop.
Marine life became a big part of our stay, particularly for River, our budding marine biology lover. He loved attending the resort’s marine life talk and joining a guided snorkelling experience with the resident marine biologist. Exploring the reef alongside someone who could point out different species and explain more about the ecosystem made the experience so much more meaningful for him.
There was plenty to do above the water too. The kids particularly loved taking a pedalo out across the lagoon, while our sunset cruise gave us another perspective of the island as the sky transformed into beautiful shades of pink and gold. Back on shore, the pristine beach was perfect for swimming and long barefoot walks, while evenings brought some of the most spectacular sunsets.
Dining throughout our stay was excellent and wonderfully varied. Edge was our spot for generous breakfast and dinner buffets, with changing selections of curries, grilled seafood, fresh produce and live cooking stations. We spent leisurely lunches overlooking the ocean at Breeze, enjoying everything from fresh salads and tacos to pizzas and burgers alongside fresh juices and beautifully made cocktails. FireDOOR offered something more refined, with its spectacular overwater setting and menu of premium seafood and grilled meats making it ideal for a special evening. A great wine list across the resort and plenty of excellent cocktails completed the experience.
When we wanted to slow down completely, the overwater spa was the perfect retreat. Suspended above the lagoon and surrounded by ocean views, it has an immediate sense of calm, and our massages were exceptional. It was easily one of our favourite ways to spend a quiet afternoon.
Grand Park Kodhipparu manages to combine the quintessential beauty of the Maldives with memorable dining, wellness and experiences for all ages. For us, however, it was the connection to the ocean that made our stay particularly special. From snorkelling the reef directly outside our villa to dolphins passing by, sunset cruises and learning about marine life together, this was a family stay filled with moments we will be talking about for a long time.
The festive season brings even more reasons to visit Grand Park Kodhipparu, with the island transformed through beautiful lighting, celebrations and special experiences throughout December. Families can look forward to a packed programme for younger guests, including festive crafts, junior cooking, movie nights, parties and creative activities. Food also plays a big part in the celebrations, with seasonal dining experiences and special menus, including Thanksgiving at FireDOOR in November. There are romantic experiences for couples too, from private beach dining and sunset celebrations to intimate proposals beneath the stars. It sounds like an especially magical time to experience the island, combining the natural beauty of the Maldives with plenty of festive atmosphere.
